Art Review: The HomeCare Projekt — where art meets the elderly with inspiring empathy

The HomeCare Projekt is what it promises to be: the title of an impassioned art project dedicated to the elders living in the HomeCare residencies in Germany. It announces an honest approach that seeks to resignify art’s social function and vindicate its power to inspire and enrich life without discrimination. The artistic project belongs to the self-taught painters Zoooooz and Maria Uberstein. Zoooooz (also known as Roland Zulehner) is a German artist who has exhibited in many venues throughout Europe and whose creative work has gained critics' interest for his vivid palette and chromatic mastery. Maria Uberstein is a South African artist who started her journey as a painter as Zoooooz's apprentice. They are an artist couple that has been running The HomeCare Projekt, an ongoing art project through which Zoooooz and Uberstein bring joy and value to the elders' lives.

The HomeCare establishments, with whom they’ve recently started an impressive long-term collaboration, host elders who live in the comfort of their privacy yet within a community with a shared kitchen and joint activities. In their peaceful environments, both Zoooooz and Uberstein’s paintings play a key role, for their artistic vision unites people and puts a smile on the inhabitants and the employees' faces alike. The HomeCare Projekt started promisingly in August 2023, when Miss Valentina Beimler, owner of the HomeCare enterprise, noticed Zoooooz’s joyful, neo-expressionist aesthetics. Following her visit to the artists’ studio, Miss Beimler commissioned them to decorate several spaces in the HomeCare premises, starting a successful collaboration that is gaining the art world’s interest.

Zoooooz and Maria Uberstein’s paintings are easy to recognize and a joy for the eye, as their artistic signatures are hard to confuse. The paintings in the HomeCare Projekt mostly include a diversity of personas portrayed (i.e. The Colorful Boss, The Wise Man or The Beautiful One with the Flowers), as well as natural still life paintings masterly painted to match the furnishings, which is why neither the colors nor the subjects of their art are no coincidence. For instance, the portraits of Buena Vista Social Club reflect joie de vivre and remind the elders of their old good times.

The portraits in the HomeCare Project are drawing critics' interest for various reasons - i.e. the art project location is a unique choice that welcomes aesthetical experiment and creative expression. But equally intriguing is Zoooooz's bright color palette, which reminds of post-expressionist aesthetics. His artistic work combines Pop art, Neo-expressionism and Primitivism influences, reminding of Basquiat's rough expression. For the portraits’ background, Zoooooz resorts to a Pop Art trick elaborated by Andy Warhol serialist technique - the solid color. By choosing a solid color, the artist emphasizes the subject over its environment, their positive feelings over concerns and freezes the happy faces in timeless symbolic portraits.

The HomeCare Projekt is, fortunately, an ongoing exhibition that accompanies elders with lively colors in a tribute to their golden (lived) memories. Furthermore, it is a tribute to anyone living in the residential communities to whom the two artists bring visions of the world they saw through the lens of art. Realistic and picturesque scenery, idyllic corners, playful animals and innocent portraits contribute to the rich inner worlds

of Zoooooz and Uberstein who, through their art, are giving back to society a glimpse of their colorful, empathetic and joyful vision that helps one stay positive and cherish life.

One question remains unanswered in regards to this ongoing art exhibition - will it manage to expand to other new HomeCare houses or will it remain an isolated artistic trial? The painting Dancing Ladies adds a special touch to the HomeCare Projekt, as the dancing bodies remind us that dancing has no age but it’s an activity performed by individuals who share an essentially positive feature. But just like every individual is unique, so the HomeCare Houses are: each of them has its own ingredient that makes them special. This is exactly Zoooooz and Uberstein’s joint quest, to draw inspiration from the HomeCare residencies and inhabitants, and give back to society a deeply empathetic art that contributes to a joyful and safe environment for the elderly. Such artistic sensitivity can only be admired and worth keeping an eye on, as they manifest a high-quality artistic approach to our beloved ones.
